OSRS Blast Furnace - Complete Guide

The Blast Furnace is a smithing activity found in Keldagrim which involves the players smelting bars in a big furnace. Players can start the Blast Furnace at any smithing level, however players will have to pay a 2500 coin fee every 10 minutes if the player is not 60 smithing or above. Whilst using the official Blast Furnace worlds, there is also an additional 72,000 gold per hour fee players have to pay. This however is not all taken at once and is taken overtime. In order to access Keldagrim, players will have to have at least started The Giant Dwarf quest in order to access the city. If going for xp, players can expect rates upward of 370k XP/HR and if players are trying to profit, they can expect profits of upwards of 1mil GP/HR.

Guide Quick-Links

Getting Started

The only requirement to use the blast furnace is starting "The Giant Dwarf" quest. You can smith at level 1 with bronze bars, however if you are lower than 60 smithing, players will have to pay an extra fee to use the furnace.

Getting There

These are the fastest ways to get to the Blast Furnace.

  1. Minigame teleport (requires the player to at least have started "The Giant Dwarf" quest)

  2. Taking a minecart to Keldagrim. The easiest one is accessible on the west side of the Grand Exchange (requires the player to at least have started "The Giant Dwarf" quest)

  3. Players can use the fairy ring DKS and run west to the cave entrance where players start "The Giant Dwarf" quest. This is the slowest route to get to Keldagrim and is not recommended

BF Worlds

You should use the official worlds whenever training smithing at the Blast Furnace. This is because there are NPC workers there running all of the machines required in order for the Blast Furnace to function, thereby increasing your XP rates significantly.

There are 14 blast furnace worlds, with 3 for each region, except for 2 for Australia.

Items & Gear

Item

Description

Coins

Required to run the blast furnace. It costs 72,000 GP/HR to just run the furnace and in paying the workmen. If players are below 60 smithing, they will have to pay another 15,000 GP/HR on top of the 72,000 GP/HR making it a total of 87,000 GP/HR to run the Blast Furnace for an hour on the official worlds. On top of that you will need coins to buy the ores to smelt.

Ores

Ores are required in order to smelt bars at the Blast Furnace. Depending on what type of bar you are trying to make, you will need the specific ores for it. Any bar that takes coal to make has its coal price halved whilst smelting it at the Blast Furnace.

Cooling Item

The best items for cooling bars, in order, are: 1. Ice Gloves (These allow you to left click the bars right away and are highly recommended) 2. Bucket of Water (There is a water source near the bank players can refill their bucket at)

Goldsmith Gauntlets

Goldsmith Gauntlets are a reward which are obtained after completing the Family Feud quest and taking the Steel Gauntlets to Avan in the Al Kharid mine. Goldsmith Gauntlets double the xp you get from smithing gold and are a must have if wanting to smelt gold at the Blast Furnace.

Coal Bag

The Coal Bag is a reward that can be bought from Percy's Motherlode Mine shop. The Coal Bag costs 100 golden nuggets and allows the player to store up to 27 pieces of coal within it, effectively making coal based bars much more efficient.

Graceful Set

The Graceful set significantly reduces your weight which means you are using less run energy. Ores and bars are heavy so this is highly recommended to have.

Full Walkthrough

Basic Rundown
  1. Make your way to the blast furnace. The fastest method is by using the minigame teleport or the minecart system in the grand exchange.

  2. Deposit money into the coffer. It costs 72,000 GP/HR to use at 60 smithing or above, or 87,000 GP/HR to use at below 60 smithing.

  3. Depending on what ore you are using, follow the guides below.

Steel Bars Guide
  1. Have ice gloves equipped with a coal bag and stamina potion in your inventory.

  2. Whenever starting to smelt, make sure to have at least one inventory of coal put in the conveyer belt before starting this method. (If you put the iron first, you will get iron instead of steel bars)

  3. After the first inventory has been deposited make sure to go to the bank. Fill up your coal bag and fill the rest of your inventory with iron.

  4. Go to the conveyer belt and deposit the inventory of iron, then empty your coal bag and deposit the inventory of coal.

  5. Pick up your bars and bank them.

  6. Repeat the process of grabbing coal, filling your bad then grabbing an inventory of iron ores.

Gold Bars Guide
  1. Have goldsmith gauntlets equipped and your ice gloves and a stamina potion in your inventory.

  2. Withdraw an inventory of gold ore.

  3. Run to the conveyer belt and deposit your ores.

  4. IMPORTANT: WAIT FOR THE XP DROP WITH YOUR GOLDSMITH GAUNTLETS ON. (If you take them off too early, you will only get half of the XP from the gold bars) After you see the XP drop you can switch to your Ice Gloves and pick up the ores.

  5. Bank your bars and withdraw a new inventory. Use stamina potions when needed if available to you.

Mithril Bars Guide
  1. Have ice gloves equipped and coal bag and a stamina potion in inventory.

  2. Withdraw an inventory of coal, put it into the coal bag, then withdraw an inventory of mithril ore.

  3. Go to the conveyer belt and deposit all of your mithril ore and coal in there.

  4. DO NOT GRAB THE BARS, instead go to the bank and fill up your coal bag and withdraw the rest of your inventory with coal.

  5. Go to the conveyer belt and deposit both of the inventories of coal.

  6. Pick up the bars, go back to the bank and withdraw an inventory of coal in your coal bag and mithril ores.

  7. Deposit the mithril and coal into the conveyer belt.

  8. Pick up the bars from the bar dispenser and go bank them.

  9. Repeat the process from step 2. (This method is a bit tricky to get into at first but provides the best XP/profit rates. You only want to grab bars whenever there is 26 of them and never whenever there are 13 of them)

Adamantite Bars Guide
  1. Have ice gloves equipped and coal bag and a stamina potion in inventory.

  2. Fill up your coal bag and withdraw the rest of your inventory with more coal.

  3. Run to the conveyer belt and deposit both inventories of coal.

  4. Run to the bank and grab coal in your coal bag and an inventory of adamant ore.

  5. Deposit the adamant ore and coal into the conveyer.

  7. Deposit the rune ore and the coal.

  8. Pick up the bars and go back to the bank.

  10. Deposit the 2 full inventories of coal at the conveyer.

  11. Run back to the bank.

  12. Fill up your coal back and grab an inventory of rune ore.

  13. Deposit the rune ore and coal into the conveyer.

  14. Pick up the bars and run back to the bank.
