Players are able to boost up to +5 with the smithing skill. Other than a few exceptions, boosts will passively drain at a rate of 1 level every 60 seconds.
This guide will go over all of the boosting items for the smithing skill and will breakdown which boosts are the easiest to get for both main accounts and ironmen.
Item | Boost Type | Level Increase | How to get the boost |
Dwarven Stout | Visible | +1 | Obtained by picking it up on a table in the white wolf tunnel |
Smithing Cape | Visible | +1 | Obtained by using the boost feature on the smithing skillcape after achieving 99 smithing |
Dwarven Stout (m) | Visible | +2 | 2 are obtained by completing the Forgettable Tale of a Drunken Dwarf quest Fermenting it yourself (takes up to 5 days) |
Kovac's Grog | Visible | +4 | 300 points at Giant's Foundry (~10 minutes) |
Spicy stew (orange) | Visible | ±0-5 | Obtained by combining 3 orange spices with a stew to make a spicy stew after completing Evil Dave's portion of the Recipe for Disaster quest. This is not a guaranteed boost and can boost the players level anywhere from -5 to +5 |
The easiest smithing skill boost achievable for mains would be Kovac's grog as players can reliably buy this on the grand exchange for less than 100k and get a guaranteed +4 boost to their smithing whenever they need it. If players need a +5 boost, its recommended to just train an extra smithing level and buying the Kovac's grog instead of going for the spicy stew boost as the spicy stews can be heavily luck dependent.
The easiest smithing skill boost achievable for irons would be either the spicy stew with the orange spices OR the Kovac's grog. Although players must get the grog themselves, this only takes around 10 minutes of Giant's foundry in order to get. The spicy stew is also a good option for irons in this case because you could get around 5+ orange spicy stews in about 10 minutes using a willy cat on hell rat behemeths in Dave's basement.
Visible skill boosts refer to boosts that directly affect your level and you can see in your stat breakdowns. With some exceptions, if you have a visible boost past your current level, it will allow you to interact with the skill in ways you would not be able to at your current level. An example of a visible skill boost would be drinking Kovac's grog before smithing. Normally, players would need 50 smithing in order to smelt a mithril bar, however with a Kovac's grog, players would only need 46 smithing to smelt a mithril bar.
Players who have unlocked the Preserve prayer with the torn prayer scroll will make this drain 50% slower putting it at a 1.5min delay per level drain. Players must have preserve active for 15 seconds before the stat drain delay starts to work.
